FRAMEWORK NOTE

5th edition International Argane Congress

The 5th edition of the International Argan Congress, organized in parallel with the first International Argan Fair, will be the edition to capitalize on the achievements of scientific research on the argan grove and the argan tree. In particular, take stock of current initiatives and approaches in terms of evaluation and valorization of the RBA’s natural capital. It will also be an opportunity to appreciate the contribution of the scientific community in terms of guiding the development of this territory and the sector. Traditional indicators, based on measures of national income such as GDP (gross domestic product), provide no information on the economic, social or environmental viability of current growth models. The consideration of natural assets in national accounting, as a means of preserving natural resources, is growing and occupies a far from negligible place compared to financial accounting. Many governments have taken this step by including forests, mineral resources, agricultural lands and wetlands in economic accounts.

During the celebration of the fortieth anniversary of Earth Day, Morocco committed to establishing a system of integrated economic and environmental accounts allowing the formulation, monitoring and evaluation of environmental and economic policies focused on sustainable development and human well-being. Also, the Green Morocco plan, the driving force behind the country’s agricultural development, plans through its sixth foundation to support reforms linked to the protection of natural capital and the introduction of sustainable practices in resource management. The Argan Biosphere Reserve with its potential and its sectors has made it possible to create value by exploiting resources for the benefit of populations. But these results did not materialize without impacts on the state and sustainability of natural resources…
