3rd edition International Argane Congress
The argan tree (Argania spinosa L.), is a tree endemic to Morocco, pivotal to a unique agro-silvo-pastoral system which extends over an area of approximately 830,000 hectares in the semi-arid to arid Atlantic regions of Morocco . This ecosystem, with multiple uses and roles, offers great potential for improving the standard of living of rural populations.
In addition to its environmental role against desertification, the multiple uses of the products and by-products of the argan tree for food, cosmetics and medicinal purposes have offered opportunities and economic benefits to the various players in the sector. However, the argan grove is subject to increased degradation due to the installation of intensive water-consuming crops, urbanization and overexploitation of forest fodder resources.
The protection and rational management of the argan grove as part of an integrated development strategy remain the only guarantees to ensure its sustainability. The heritage of the argan tree and the practices and know-how linked to it certainly plays a role
a lever role for sustainable development and a fundamental component of human development. However, more efforts need to be made to ensure an effective contribution to the local economy. Scientific research is called upon at this level to innovate in terms of approach and tools for investigation and the development of practical options.
In this vision and with a view to capitalizing and charting perspectives in terms of scientific research, the international argan congress is a meeting and exchange meeting between members of the scientific community and a place of communication and promotion of research work carried out on the argan grove and the argan tree. The objective being the sharing of scientific and technical knowledge between national and international researchers, managers, economic players and users with the aim of contributing to the consolidation of an action plan aimed at the development of the tourism sector. argan tree on solid scientific bases.
